It depends on your state, the wall height and its location relative to boundaries and structures. Many councils exempt low walls (often under 1m) from formal approval, but exemption thresholds and rules vary by state and council. See our Council Approval & Compliance page for a general overview, or ask us to confirm exactly what applies to your site.
Yes — in some cases (e.g. walls close to a boundary, on a heritage site, or affecting drainage/easements) a separate planning approval pathway can apply in addition to standard building approval. We'll flag this if it's relevant to your project.
Retaining walls are designed to AS 4678 (Earth-retaining structures) in combination with your state's building regulations and local council requirements.
Design and certification must be carried out by a qualified, registered structural engineer. Depending on your state, documentation may also need to be lodged with or reviewed by a building certifier or council.
Typically: structural calculations, construction drawings and an engineer's certificate. Some councils require additional forms — see our Council Approval & Compliance page.
Yes, and they vary by state and council. Walls near a boundary often carry extra requirements around adjoining owner notification, encroachment and support.
Often, but not always — some councils still require notification or basic compliance even for low walls, and structural engineering is still recommended for safety even where approval isn't legally required.
You risk a council stop-work or rectification order, difficulty selling the property, and no legal recourse if the wall fails. It's usually far cheaper to get it right upfront than to retrofit compliance later.
Almost always, yes. Poor or missing drainage is the leading cause of retaining wall failure — our designs specify drainage (ag-drain, gravel blanket, weep holes) as standard.
Any additional load sitting above or behind the wall — a driveway, pool, building or parked vehicle — that increases the pressure the wall must resist. It must be factored into the design.
Yes, treated timber/sleeper walls remain a compliant option for lower walls when properly engineered — see our Wall Types page for what we cover.
Yes — sloping sites, reactive soils and multi-tiered walls are common and something we specifically account for in design.
Yes. Taller and multi-tiered walls generally require more detailed geotechnical input, which we can coordinate as part of the project.
Yes — see our Soil Testing & Geotechnical Coordination service. Ground conditions materially affect the design, so this is often a necessary first step for taller or complex walls.
Fees start from $500 AUD and scale with wall height and site complexity. See our Pricing page, or request a fixed quote for your specific project.
Most residential jobs are completed within 5-10 business days of receiving your site information. Urgent jobs can often be prioritised.
Yes — we work with clients across Australia. Most projects are handled remotely from your site plans, photos and soil information, without a site visit.
Yes, alongside homeowners directly. We provide clear, buildable documentation either way.
Yes — see our Inspections & Structural Assessment service for new, existing or failing walls.
We also provide pre-purchase, building defect and general structural inspection reports — see Structural Engineer Reports.
A structural engineer designs the wall and certifies it meets Australian Standards and council requirements — the calculations, drawings and documentation. A builder or landscaper then constructs it to that design. Council approval generally requires the engineer's sign-off; it isn't something a builder can self-certify.
In most cases, yes. We assess most residential projects remotely from your site plan, photos and a soil report where one is needed — this keeps turnaround fast and cost down. If your site has unusual complexity, we'll let you know if more information is required.
Send us your project details and we'll get back to you within 1-2 business hours.
